In today's digital world, an email address is an essential communication tool. It allows you to send messages, share documents, and much more. If you don't have your own email address or want to create a new one, it's a simple process that only takes a few minutes. In this article, we show you step by step how to create your own email address.
Step 0: Free Email vs. Own Email Domain
One more step before you really start creating your own email address, you need to decide whether you want an email address from a provider whose domain name is visible in your email address, for example max.sample@gmail.com or whether you want to use your own domain ending. For a better comparison, we have created a table for you:
Free Email | Own Email Domain | |
Example | max.sample@gmail.com john-doe-123@gmx.net | max@sampleman.net john.doe@jd-business.net |
Setup | possible without technical knowledge; usually only takes a few minutes | technical knowledge required depending on the provider; setup usually takes several hours (especially if the domain still needs to be registered) |
Costs | almost always free, as financed by advertising | Cost for own Domain (€5 to €20 / year), possibly additional web storage for emails |
Number of Email Addresses | Depending on the provider, you can only create one or a few email addresses per registration | An own email domain allows unlimited email addresses |
External Effect | No problem for private use, in the business context free email addresses look unprofessional | Obligatory for companies or professional purposes |
The condition for creating your own email domain is that the corresponding domain is still available or is already in your possession. In this article we only describe the path of a own email address using a free email provider. An article on your own email domain will follow shortly.
Step 1: Choose an Email Provider
There are many (free) email providers to choose from, including Gmail, GMX, Web.net and many more. Choose a provider that meets your needs and preferences. For this article we choose Gmail, as it is one of the most popular options. Here is a list of the most well-known (free) providers:
- Gmail / Googlemail
- gmx.net
- web.net
- mail.net
- Yahoo
- Outlook (formerly Hotmail)
Step 2: Go to the Email Provider's Registration Page
Open your web browser and go to the registration page of the email provider of your choice. In our case we visit www.gmail.com.
Step 3: Click on "Create Account" or "Register"
On the email provider's registration page you will usually find an option such as "Create Account" or "Register". Click on it to start the process of creating your new email account.
Step 4: Enter your Details
Fill out the registration form by entering your personal information such as firstname, lastname, desired username and a secure password. Make sure your password is strong enough by using uppercase, lowercase, numbers and special characters. If you need help remembering difficult passwords, you should get a Password Manager.
Step 5: Verify your Identity
Some email providers may require additional verification of your identity to ensure that you are a real user. (This verification has become increasingly common in recent years after free email providers were often used for spam purposes.) This can be done through a phone number or an alternative email address. Enter the required information and follow the instructions to confirm your identity.
Step 6: Accept the Terms of Use and click on "Next"
Read the terms of use of the email provider carefully - just like you probably always do 😬 - and agree to them if you are okay with them. Then click on "Next" to complete the creation process.
Step 7: Congratulations! You have created your own email address
After you have completed the steps above, you have successfully created your own email address! You can now send and receive emails, share files, and much more. Remember your password, keep it safely or save it in a password manager.
That's it! With these simple steps, you've created your own email address and are ready to explore the world of digital communication. Have fun sending and receiving emails!
