What are the disadvantages of Canva?

Canva provides numerous templates and media for designs. However, the filters are relatively rudimentary, which can make searching time-consuming. Since Canva is browser-based, it can become slow with large projects.

The tool is easy to use thanks to drag-and-drop functionality, but it is limited in features. Canva is not suitable for detailed vector graphics or complex image editing. There are no layers like in GIMP, and when it comes to background removal or photo retouching, Canva quickly reaches its limits.

Another downside is that exporting designs is not very flexible. CMYK colors are not supported, and the SVG export of vector graphics is often faulty. You cannot edit Canva files in other programs like Adobe Illustrator.

Canva is initially free to use. However, to unlock all features and access more stock photos, you need the paid subscription version, Canva Pro. Alternatives offer similar features at lower or one-time costs.

Canva Alternatives: Variety for Every Scenario

Canva is already an excellent choice for many users. However, an alternative might be a better fit for you. There are both free and paid tools, and some are also available as apps. Whether you want to create infographics, wireframes, or social media posts – find the right Canva alternative for each graphic design project.

For Various Design Tasks

It is impossible to talk about graphic design without mentioning Adobe. With fewer design templates but great editing features, Adobe Express is a strong option. Drag and drop stock photos, animation effects, or videos into a design. No prior knowledge is needed. The tool is easy to handle and very similar to Canva in its functionality. Users of Adobe Creative Cloud can access all features for free.

If you are familiar with Adobe programs, you should quickly master Affinity Designer. VistaCreate, Venngage, and PicMonkey also cover a wide range of design tasks and are as versatile as Canva.

PicMonkey, Adobe Express, and VistaCreate also have apps. With the VistaCreate Editor, you get an API interface, allowing you to integrate and personalize the tool directly into your platform.

Tools for Image Editing

Primarily suitable for image editing is Pixlr. Make quick adjustments and add filters thanks to AI-powered editing. Besides classic image editing functions, you can use design tools to create collages, resumes, or social media posts. This Canva alternative works directly in your browser or as an app for Android and iOS.

PicMonkey is another alternative to Canva that allows you to refine your photos. Apply filters, elements, or text and edit each layer individually – just as you might know from Adobe Photoshop.

Suitable for Presentations

Focused on interactive and visual presentations, Prezi and Visme stand out. With Prezi, you create interactive presentations with zoom-in and zoom-out effects, while Visme is more similar to traditional PowerPoint. After selecting a template, you can modify text, graphics, colors, and layout. A downside: The free version has limited features.

Canva Alternatives for Infographics

Visme also excels in infographics. Drag-and-drop templates allow you to visualize statistics and data within minutes. You can make each object interactive, such as clickable menus or hover effects. Piktochart is also suitable for data visualization. Upload your Excel data with one click and transform it into charts and more.

Tools for Web Design

If you want to design websites or mobile apps, Figma or Sketch might be good options. Figma offers professional design tools along with countless pre-made elements, making it suitable even for users without prior experience. Another advantage: Multiple people can work on the same file, and Figma saves everything in real time.

You can also collaborate in real time with Sketch. However, this Canva alternative is specifically designed for macOS users. The tool is ideal for wireframes, mockups, click dummies, and vectors. Designs can be exported in various formats and sizes and edited further in other programs if needed.

Free Canva Alternatives

Looking for a Canva alternative that is completely free? Many graphic design applications, like Canva itself, offer free versions. For example, the starter package of Figma, VistaCreate, or Piktochart is free. Adobe Express also offers a permanently free version, though with limited functionality.

Paid Canva Alternatives

If you are considering a paid tool, many offer a trial version first, such as Affinity Designer. If you decide to purchase this Canva alternative after the trial period, you pay a one-time fee of €19.99 for the iPad app and €74.99 for the desktop app. Figma starts at €15 per user per month. For comparison: Canva’s Pro version costs €12 per user per month. These are the prices as of January 2025.

Similar to Canva: More Design Tools

In addition to the tools mentioned, there are many other applications that can serve as Canva alternatives. Test the free versions to find the best solution for your project.
