More and more users are using the TikTok app, making it an increasingly interesting marketing channel for more and more brands. To effectively use the platform, you need a TikTok strategy. With this, you can optimally position yourself and your brand and win new interested people.
Why you should use TikTok for your business
The social media platform TikTok is currently the most downloaded social media app, with more than a billion active users per month. German users open the app on average eight times per day. On average, they spend 50 minutes in the app (as of 2019, source: Digiday). Thanks to the high number of users, TikTok has now also had a major cultural influence and can make posts, songs or trends go viral in the form of video posts in no time at all. In addition, users can collaborate on videos, which means responding to or remixing them. The main focus of TikTok is on content, which is why only content that interests you is shown there - and not just content from accounts you follow. Through the algorithm, your company can achieve a high reach in a short time.
Since the app offers users a factor of addiction thanks to the short, entertaining videos, you can expect a high engagement for your brand. Many users nowadays use social media as a search engine. They are looking for informative and well-made content through which they can learn new things without having to read up on a topic for hours. Instagram has also recognised this TikTok trend and launched Instagram Reels. Both formats are very successful and encourage users to expand their knowledge and gain a competent impression of your brand.
Of course, TikTok has to fit your target group. So, who uses the app particularly often? The target group is mainly made up of Generation Z, i.e. teenagers born between 1997 and 2012. They come from over 155 countries, with slightly more female than male users using TikTok. Therefore, the social media platform is particularly interesting for you if you want to address young people with your offers. Since the target group values authenticity and personality in your videos, your production costs will be low. The only major investment you need to make is creativity.
Your presence on TikTok can make your brand more well-known, promote your products and services, intensify interaction with your customers and generate feedback from your users.
How to create a TikTok strategy
To get started with TikTok marketing as a company, you need a TikTok strategy. To make sure you can get started right away, we have compiled a guide for you:
1. Set up an account
After registration, first fill out your bio so that visitors can see immediately what type of content they can expect from you. You probably already know this part from Instagram. It's important that you are straight to the point as you only have 80 characters available. Next, convert your account into a brand account so that you can use TikTok Analytics later. These are as readable as Instagram Analytics, but more on that later.
2. Define your target group
Even if you already know that the majority of people who use TikTok belong to Gen Z, you still need to clearly define your target group. Only then can you align your TikTok marketing accordingly.
3. Visit your competitors' profiles
You don't always have to reinvent the wheel. From time to time it can be helpful to inspect the profiles of your competitors and let their content inspire you. If they have been active on TikTok for longer than you, they will certainly have gained some experience that can help you get started. Also take a look at content creators who cover topics from your industry. Analyse which content works well, what reactions they receive and how other users create their content.
4. Research hashtags
The same applies to hashtags. Many users use the platform's search function, which is why you should take a closer look at your competitors' hashtags. You should also use these and add other keywords.
5. Get inspired by trends
You realise, creativity is key for TikTok brands. So get involved with the current TikTok trends and use them to raise your brand's profile. The prerequisite is of course that the statements and values of these trends match your company.
6. Determine your USP
A brand must clearly communicate its USP to be successful. This also applies on social media. Ask yourself why users should watch your content. What do you have to offer that others don't have? What are you particularly good at? And how do you get users to stop scrolling through the video jungle and watch your content attentively? Note these points in your strategy. Also make sure that the answers run like a red thread through all the content you create, so that you get a recognition value and your followers look forward to your next videos.
7. Set Goals
A strategy is easier to follow if you know what you want to achieve with your efforts. Formulate your goals smart and in writing. Do you want to win new customers or improve your brand image? Or do you want to increase traffic to a landing page or market your products and services?
8. Publish your first post
Now it's down to the nitty-gritty - your first post. You have a good idea and are ready to implement it; your video is ready. Add a meaningful description to your video. This should include the most important search terms encourage users to comment and explain what your content is about.
After it has gone online, you should monitor the comment column and interact with your users, otherwise they may quickly lose interest.

Like any social media network, TikTok also rewards you for regularly delivering content. Set a rhythm that you can realistically maintain. Plan fixed times for your content creation and save your ideas in a TikTok suitable tool. This way you always know which content should be posted when and what you still need to do for it. You can also publish existing TikTok content as an Instagram Reel and also address your target group that is there.10. About social media tools you can measure your results, keep an eye on current trends and better understand the interaction of your target group. TikTok provides various data for this.
