What is Mandrill?

Mandrill itself is a paid add-on for Mailchimp, which is probably the most widely used newsletter tool for small businesses. What the tool is supposed to enable: the fast, personalized sending of transactional emails via API or SMTP, without ever landing in the spam folder. New users can send up to 500 free emails to their verified domain. The prices for regular use then vary depending on the number of emails and can be viewed on the website. The tool can be tried out for free.

What did you like?

Integrated nicely within Mailchimp to be able to use templates and send directly to mandrill to be updated in the campaigns. Easy to set-up and good testing interface. Possibility to track and get an overview of running campaigns.

What did you not like?

Some aspects that could be improved: having an unsubscribe/opt-out button per campaign in Mandrill instead of unsubscribing from the overall mailing list: some users still wish to receive certain emails but unsubscribing from our mandrill campaigns removes them fully from all other campaigns. The tracking of opening rate in the reporting seems to double-count opens per user e.g. can have an open rate of over 100% if users open their emails multiple times. It's possible to change the settings for this but find this an odd default setting in the reporting. It's the same between Mailchimp and Mandrill so maybe just an integration default when they were merged.

Which problems are you solving with the product?

Mandrill really helps us a lot in being able to automate our event-based and transactional email campaigns. Being able to send out campaigns based on user-actions and certain events being triggered is essential for us and we found the tag-based approach in Mailchimp a bit clunky. Being able to integrate Mandrill directly with our Mailchimp templates and campaigns has saved us a lot of time and effort and required little engineering work to get started. Also the documentation available meant the set-up process ran smoothly including connecting domains.

What did you like?

Mit Mandrill können Transactional-Mails automatisch und unkompliziert an (ausgewählte) Nutzer(gruppen) verschickt werden. Ist die Journey einmal erstellt, erhalten die Nutzer automatisch zum von dir ausgewählten Zeitpunkt die passende Mail. Besonders die Planung von Reaktivierungs-Kampagnen fällt somit viel leichter. Außerdem erspart das Tool sehr viel Zeit. Du kannst natürlich auch individuell Newsletter erstellen und an dezidiert Gruppen versenden. MailChimp stellt dafür diverse eigene Vorlagen bereit, du kannst aber auch selbst kreativ werden.

What did you not like?

Die Integration via API war zu Beginn etwas kompliziert. Bei einem Systemausfall konnte für mehrere Stunden keine Mail verschickt werden.Schwierig wird es auch, wenn du auf deiner Website oder in deiner App die Möglichkeit implementieren willst, sich z.b. über den persönlichen Bereich vom Newsletter abzumelden. Dafür stellt MailChimp leider keine Schnittstellen zur Synchronisation bereit, d.h. man muss die Audience dann manuell aufwändig synchronisieren. Außerdem zählen Unsubscribes leider auch in die Rechnung mit rein, d.h. man muss diese mit bezahlen oder über einen manuellen Vorgang regelmäßig selbst entfernen.

Vorplanung einer Journey, die jeder neue Nutzer durchläuft (Willkommensmail, Geburtstagsgrüße, Reaktivierungskampagne usw.). Einmaliger großer Aufwand, anschließend enorme Zeitersparnis. Versand monatlicher, selbst erstellter Newsletter.

What did you like?

Besonders hervorzuheben ist die Eigenschaft als Add-On zu einem der meistgenutzten Mail-Tools (MailChimp). Die Bedienung ist ähnlich nativ und einfach, wie man es von MailChimp gewohnt ist. Zudem ist der Versand von transaktionalen Mails mit Mandrill kostengünstig zu realisieren.

What did you not like?

Die initiale Integration in bestehende CRM-Systeme ist etwas schwerfällig und Bedarf einer gewissen technischen Expertise. Auch könnte sich das Add-On etwas besser ins MailChimp-Backend integrieren.

Which problems are you solving with the product?

Mandrill kommt bei uns beim Versand von transaktionalen Mails eines Finanzdienstleisters zum Einsatz. Konkret werden dem Kunden kontobezogene Informationen wie Updates zu Ein- und Auszahlungen, weiteren Buchungen und rechtliche Pflichtinformationen zugestellt. Auch Hinweise zu Kontoaktivität werden über Mandrill zugestellt.

What did you like?

Mandrill ist ein Übersichtliches zum Verwalten der Email-Kommunikation. Es Biete Reports wie Monatlich gesendete-, Bounced-, Delivered-, Rejected-Mails und eine Historie der versendeten Emails. Es können gestylte Templates direkt in Mandrill angelegt werden (html mit variablen). Außerdem kann Mandrill über eine api angesprochen werden und so können E-Mails durch software versendet werden. Durch verschiedene api-keys kann auch zugeordnet werden, welches Programm welche E-Mail versendet hat.

What did you not like?

Die Templates können bei der Erstellung nicht in real-time angesehen werden, man muss immer erst vorher Speichern.

Which problems are you solving with the product?

Mandrill handled bei uns im Unternehmen den gesamten Versand der Newsletter und DOI E-Mails. Somit kann eingesehen, was an welchen Nutzer versendet wurde und eine Statistik darüber erstellt werden, wie unsere E-Mails beim Nutzer ankommen.

What did you not like?

Keine Templates vorhanden Zudem muss MailChimp kostenpflichtig abonniert werden, was Mandrill wiederum recht kostspielig macht.

Durch unsere API Anbindung können unsere Nutzer sehr einfach zur richtigen Zeit mit den richtigen Informationen beliefert werden.
