What did you like?

From a developer’s perspective, Umbraco really stands out. The fact that it is built on the .NET ecosystem gives you a mature, strongly‑typed environment with all the advantages of C# and ASP.NET. You’re not forced into restrictive themes or templates—the platform gives you freedom to define your own document types, layout structures, API endpoints and integrate external systems smoothly. Its flexibility also means that the same core platform can support both small landing pages and complex enterprise‑scale solutions. The editing experience for content authors and non‑technical editors is also quite polished.

What did you not like?

When it comes to upgrades and migrations with Umbraco CMS, historically the process has required a considerable effort. Especially in projects with a high degree of customization it has been common to face major challenges when upgrading. That said, our current experience moving from version 13 to version 17 (or beyond) paints a much more promising picture. We kicked off the upgrade this week and are already nearing completion.

Which problems are you solving with the product?

For me, Umbraco is the go‑to platform for a wide range of web application scenarios. When you need a corporate website, whether modest in size or spanning many countries/brands, you have a CMS that supports multi‑site, multilingual setups and gives editors autonomy while developers retain control over custom implementations. When you build portal solutions, intranets or e‑commerce systems, the extensibility and API‑friendly architecture allow integration with CRMs, external services, native apps or headless front‑ends. Moreover, when you want a platform that can start small (for example a lightweight landing page) but scale up into something enterprise‑level without being locked in, Umbraco delivers.

What did you like?

super schneller Setup und Updates funktionieren top (kein Vergleich zu Sitecore). Einfache Bedienung und jederzeit unkompliziert erweiterbar. Support und Dokumentation ist tadellos und top verständlich. Einfach und rasch zu erlernen - ich habe lange mit Sitecore gearbeitet - Umbraco ist im Vergleich dazu der Himmel auf Erden!

What did you not like?

Bei der Userverwaltung sehe ich noch Verbesserungspotential und der Import/Export von Translations könnte für mich noch besser werden. Aber jammern auf hohem Niveau. Die Community in der Schweiz dürfte noch grösser werden - da steckt Umbraco mit der Bekanntheit noch in den Kinderschuhen.

mit dem besten Open-Source-CMS haben wir die Lizenzkosten auf ein absolutes Minimum reduziert. Die Seiten wurden schneller und können auch Multisites einfach und in guter Qualität erstellen. Update- und Betriebsthemen vereinfacht.

What did you like?

Umbraco provides an incredibly flexible and scalable foundation for managing complex multisite environments. Its content architecture is perfectly suited for enterprises that operate multiple brands, markets, or language versions under one umbrella. The content tree and user permissions model allow for clean separation between sites while maintaining centralized control — which is invaluable for governance and brand consistency. The Headless API options and Umbraco Cloud integrations make it easy to connect with enterprise systems like ERP, CRM, and DAM platforms. The editing experience is a major plus: editors can manage shared assets, synchronize components across sites, and roll out updates quickly without needing developer support. In short, Umbraco combines the flexibility of an open-source CMS with the reliability and performance expected in enterprise contexts — all while staying developer-friendly and editor-centric.

What did you not like?

The main drawback is that Umbraco’s flexibility can require more initial configuration and architectural planning than rigid “out-of-the-box” systems.

Its headless setup makes it simple to deliver content across different channels and systems. We run high-traffic sites with strict security and compliance demands — Umbraco’s .NET foundation and Azure hosting handle that perfectly. It fits well into enterprise IT environments, keeps developers happy, and gives editors a smooth, intuitive experience.

Was mir an Umbraco am besten gefällt, ist die perfekte Balance zwischen technischer Flexibilität und Redaktionsfreundlichkeit. Entwickler:innen können nahezu alles individuell umsetzen – von komplexen Content-Strukturen bis hin zu Integrationen in Drittsysteme – und gleichzeitig bleibt die Bedienung für Redakteur:innen intuitiv und übersichtlich. Besonders stark ist auch das modulare Konzept mit eigenem Datenschema, das sich perfekt an Unternehmensanforderungen anpassen lässt. Dazu kommt eine aktive Community und ein professioneller Support, der die Weiterentwicklung konstant vorantreibt.

What did you not like?

Was mir an Umbraco weniger gefällt, ist, dass der Einstieg für Redakteur:innen ohne technisches Vorwissen etwas steiler ist als bei anderen CMS. Viele Funktionen entfalten ihren vollen Nutzen erst, wenn Entwickler:innen mit an Bord sind – das ist einerseits Stärke, andererseits Hürde. Zudem könnten einige Standard-Features (z. B. Massenbearbeitung von Medien oder vereinfachtes Workflow-Management) noch moderner umgesetzt sein. Nichts Dramatisches, aber Punkte, die man beim Setup und in der Planung berücksichtigen sollte.

Mit Umbraco lösen wir das Problem, komplexe Webprojekte flexibel und zukunftssicher umzusetzen – ohne an starre Strukturen gebunden zu sein. Wir können mehrsprachige Websites, individuelle Content-Modelle und API-basierte Integrationen sauber abbilden, was bei anderen CMS oft nur über Umwege funktioniert. Für unsere Kund:innen bedeutet das: höhere Performance, bessere Skalierbarkeit und ein einheitliches Redaktionssystem, das langfristig mitwächst. Auch im Betrieb profitieren wir von der stabilen .NET-Basis und dem Headless-Ansatz, der moderne Frontends auf React oder Vue problemlos ermöglicht.

What did you like?

I love the flexibility, stability, and performance of the system. There is no requirement that cannot be solved with Umbraco. Another great strength is the excellent user experience for the editors.

What did you not like?

For several years, the upgradability was a challenge. However, this has significantly improved in recent years.

Which problems are you solving with the product?

For all demanding web projects in the area of corporate websites, we use Umbraco. After a short introduction, all editors can work with the system easily and intuitively. Even the most complex requirements can be implemented excellently. The open architecture also makes it easy to integrate additional systems or supply data from the CMS.

Fully customizable CMS, fast an modern… With a very clever API structure. Complex but powerful and very fast. Runs in docker as well, therefore easy to run...

What did you not like?

Actually I do not know what to write here. Maybe it’s complex for a DAU, but which DAU will use a CMS?

Leider ist Umbraco in Deutschland noch nicht so verbreitet wie in vielen anderen europäischen Ländern.

Bessere Adaption durch hervorragende Editor-Experience. Extrem gute Frontend-Performance, gerade im Headless-Betrieb. "Echtes" Open-Source aufgrund der MIT-Lizenz

What did you like?

Es ist ein wirklich tolles CMS für die Bearbeitung von Inhalten! Es ist super einfach zu bedienen und eignet sich hervorragend für die Schulung von Mitarbeitern, da es so einfach ist, dass sogar die nicht-Digital-Affine Nutzer das benutzen können. Das Support, Tipps und Anleitungen sind ebenso sehr gut. Es ist sehr übersichtlich und man kann alle Elemente leicht finden. Aber auch für Entwickler bietet das System genug Flexibilität um die Seite für eigene Bedürfnisse zu erstellen.

What did you not like?

Ist einfach zu bedienen, aber es fehlen komplexe Funktionen, die vielleicht durch Plug-ins gelöst werden könnten. Gelegentlich kommt es zu kleineren Fehlern, z.B. wenn die Änderungen nicht mit dem ersten Klick gespeichert werden können. Diese Probleme treten bei mir aber nicht sehr häufig auf.

Das CMS eignet sich gut für die Erstellung von großen und kleinen Websites. Besonders für Redakteure oder Content Marketer ist das System sehr einfach zu bedienen und erleichtert die Pflege von Inhalten. Das CMS ermöglicht es, mehrere Seiten schnell und ohne großen Aufwand in guter Qualität zu erstellen.

What did you like?

Das System ist sicher. Die geringe Verbreitung, wenige Plugins, bieten nur wenig Angriffspunkte. Für versierte Designer mit ASP.NET Framework Wissen sicherlich ein Traum, da wirklich alles customized werden kann.

What did you not like?

Die Usability für End-User ist - da sollte man sich nichts vormachen - unnötig kompliziert. Intuitives Vorgehen bei der Bedienung sucht man vergebens. Ein großes Portfolio von Plugins oder Themes gibt es nicht, die Community ist überschaubar. Lösungen oder Ideen müssen im Großteil der Fälle erst entsprechend tatsächlich entwickelt werden.

Wir nutzen Umbraco für unsere multi-language company website. Solange man sich im fertig entwickelten System bewegt ist eine dedizierte Rechtevergabe möglich. Resultat: Wirklich "kaputt" machen können End-User hier nichts, sondern müssen die sich im vorgegebenen System bewegen.

Es ist relativ einfach, sich selber beizubringen, da es intuitiv aufgebaut ist.

What did you not like?

Die Bedienbarkeit ist trotz der Intuitivität nicht richtig gegeben. Man muss viel ausprobieren und experimentieren bis es so aussieht, wie man es gerne hätte. Teilweise ist auch nciht alles möglich...
