According to Modern Retail, customer reviews are evolving into the central success factor for visibility in AI-driven search systems like ChatGPT. Consumers are increasingly using these chatbots for product discovery—in the US alone, over 84 million shopping-related queries are generated via ChatGPT every week. These systems do not rely solely on traditional keywords; instead, they lean heavily on user feedback and reviews. For brands, this means that appearing in AI-generated answers requires a proactive strategy to build and manage review content.

Proven Impact on AI Rankings

Evidence shows that reviews have a direct influence on how AI ranks brands. Eric Edelson, CEO of Fireclay Tile, told Modern Retail that his brand features prominently in ChatGPT responses, largely due to particularly detailed customer reviews. A recent test confirmed this: ChatGPT identified Fireclay Tile as the best DTC (Direct-to-Consumer) tile brand in California, explicitly citing user reviews as the primary reason for the recommendation.

Strategies for Increasing Visibility

To boost their AI presence, companies are increasingly turning to active review strategies. The dog food brand Pawco, for instance, offers customers a $20 discount for submitting a review after their third order. Fireclay Tile also takes a systematic approach by using personalized review requests, internal employee competitions, and even charitable donations in exchange for feedback.

Prioritizing Depth and Timing

The data suggests that quantity isn't everything; the timing and depth of reviews are equally crucial. Pawco intentionally waits several weeks or until a customer has placed multiple orders before requesting feedback to ensure more well-founded, detailed reports. Especially for high-consideration products or sensitive categories like pet food and interior design, trust is paramount—and detailed reviews provide the necessary context for both human users and AI systems.

Navigating the Data Ecosystem

Another decisive factor is data accessibility. While platforms like Reddit are making their content specifically accessible to AI through partnerships with OpenAI, others—like Amazon—are blocking such access. Consequently, public forums, specialized review platforms, and community sites are regaining relevance. For brands, this means reviews should not be confined to their own websites but should be distributed across platforms like Yelp, TripAdvisor, or Reddit to ensure they are indexed by AI models.
