Nick Turley is Head of ChatGPT at OpenAI. He helped build the product from its earliest concept into one of the most widely used services in the world, reaching hundreds of millions of active users and generating billions in revenue. Previously, Nick held leadership roles in product management at Instacart and Dropbox. He studied philosophy and computer science at Brown University. Born and raised in Itzehoe, Germany, Nick moved to the US after high school and now lives in San Francisco. Outside of work, he is an active jazz pianist who performs regularly around the city.
Few topics have been discussed as intensively in recent days and weeks as artificial intelligence. Who will take over whom, where and how will regulations be implemented, and does ChatGPT have what it takes to become the next gatekeeper after Google and social media? These are just some of the big questions the industry is currently grappling with, especially regarding AI chatbots.
What many don’t know in this context: The answer to this question largely depends on a German from Itzehoe in Schleswig-Holstein—Nicholas Turley. As Head of Product for ChatGPT, he leads all "user-facing product teams" at OpenAI. His track record so far is quite impressive: According to his LinkedIn profile, he "led ChatGPT from launch to hundreds of millions of active users, billions in revenue, and the eighth most popular site in the world." There are likely very few people who currently have a better inside view of the engine room of one of the world’s most important AI models.
