World champion, European champion, four-time Champions League winner: as an active professional footballer, Gerard Piqué has won the most important international titles. However, the 38-year-old has no intention of resting on his laurels. Whether as the owner of FC Andorra or as the founder of the sports and media holding company Kosmos: off the pitch, Piqué is now actively shaping the future of sport after the end of his career.
The Kings League is at the center of his work. The revolutionary sports format aims to merge the best of soccer with the creator economy and new ways of communicating. The result is an indoor small-sided league that combines artificial show elements like in wrestling, a draft system like in the NFL or penalty shooting like in ice hockey in one product. So-called “action cards” are designed to give the 40-minute games surprising twists and turns like in any good video game. Everything to compete for attention against Netflix, Tiktok & Co. - and to get younger generations interested in soccer: 85% of Kings League viewers are under 34.
With a financing round of around 60 million euros led by Left Lane Capital, Piqué is currently on its way to rolling out the Kings League worldwide. The premiere in Spain at the beginning of 2023 has already been followed by market entries in Brazil, France, Italy, Mexico and, most recently, Germany. More new markets are on the agenda for the near future.
