Sustainability

Sustainability at the OMR Festival

Let’s make one thing perfectly clear: Putting on an event of this size is not sustainable. We’re not going to claim otherwise or put a spin on things. Instead, we want to highlight what we have learned along the way, as well as the measures we have taken to make the OMR Festival more sustainable step by step.

Klimabilanz OMR23

Carbon footprint OMR23

To better understand the environmental impact the Festival has, we documented the carbon footprint for the OMR Festival 2023. With each carbon footprint we record, we can have a detailed picture of our emissions, where we can improve and base future Festivals on these calculations. At OMR23, we calculated the total amount of emissions generated at 10,446 tons of CO2 equivalents (CO2e).

One of the biggest causes of emissions for events like these is mobility. In particular, how people get to the Festival and back. In the interest of transparency, we’re sharing with you our calculated carbon footprint here and how we’ve performed in individual areas:

CSR Report OMR23

CSR Report OMR23

In addition to calculating our carbon footprint, we also reviewed the measures we implemented at OMR23 as part of our sustainability strategy. In some areas, we have already been able to measure an initial impact thanks to readily available data. For example, our vegan-first approach meant that over half of the food served during the festival was vegan and over 80 percent of the food consumed contained no meat or fish products.

Around 38,000 meals were sold during our pilot project to equip food hall B6 entirely with reusable tableware. Around 93,000 pieces of reusable tableware were used - from bowls and plates to forks, knives and chopsticks. More details can be found in our CSR report on OMR23:

Measures OMR24

In planning our measures, we are guided by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on our strategy for OMR23, we have focused our measures for OMR24 on three areas: Infrastructure, Waste and Content.

Infrastructure

Vegan first

This year, we will continue to pursue our "Vegan First" strategy from OMR23, offering primarily vegan dishes. There will also be a selected range of meat and fish dishes.

Promoting travel by rail

To promote climate-friendly mobility for OMR24 attendees, we have partnered up with German rail provider Deutsche Bahn to offer attendees a 20-percent discount on two long-distance rail trips. OMR24 ticket holders can simply enter the discount code and save on both the outward and return journeys.

Livestream

A large part of our on-stage keynotes will be streamed live on our website to grant visitors not in attendance access to the content.

Bicycle parking lot

Many Festival-goers based in Hamburg will commute to the event by bike—an obvious boon to the environment. To further support our bike-riding attendees, OMR24 will have a dedicated bike parking lot at the West Entrance and Heiligengeistfeld for the first time in the Festival’s history. More than 500 additional parking spaces will be available free of charge.

Renewable energy supply

Hamburg Exhibition power supply is generated entirely from renewable energy sources. You can find more information on this in the Hamburg Exhibition Center’s sustainability report.

Trinkwasserspender

For our drinking water supply at OMR24, we work together with the Water Is Right Foundation, among others. They offer solutions for festivals and with their mobile water dispensers we can reduce our emissions in the logistics sector and support global water projects.

Waste

Reusable concept

Expanding upon our pilot project from OMR23, we are introducing new return options in the food hall this year. It is our aim to test ways, in which we can scale up the use of reusable tableware to other areas of the OMR Festival moving forward. As in previous years in addition, reusable cups will be used throughout the Festival site.

Reuse of materials

Whenever possible, we will recollect and store the production materials used at the OMR Festival and reuse them for future Festivals. In cases where we cannot, we closely work with our partner Trash Galore to promote the reuse or secondary use of materials for social initiatives.

Donating leftover food

As in previous years, we will donate our leftover food to CaFée mit Herz and Hamburger Tafel.

Recycled bin liners

At OMR24, we use several thousand bin liners made from circular materials, more precisely with the plastic collected from the wild by our partner wildplastic.

Content

Impact Area

At OMR24, we want to make it easier for impact organizations, such as non-profit initiatives or social businesses, to access the OMR Festival, promote their networking opportunities and increase their visibility. In cooperation with our non-profit partner Lemonaid & ChariTea e.V., we will award exhibition space to such organizations via a jury as part of an open application process.

Guided Tours

Last year, we introduced the sustainability at OMR23 Guided Tour. This year it’s back and will once again give our visitors insights into the sustainability structure and measures in place at OMR Festival.

Stage program with sustainable content

We will continue to prioritize sustainability content and topics across all OMR24 stages. Thus, we will be able to maximize the impact of sustainability topics by reaching as many visitors as possible with relevant topics. This content can easily be found in the stage program using the "Purpose & Sustainability" filter.

Stage for equal rights and a fairer working world

OMR24 will once again feature the OMR 5050 stage, where the spotlight will shine on topics of equal rights and a fairer world of work. Current topics will be presented in formats such as keynotes, panels and fireside chats.

Awarness concept

A large event like OMR24 brings together a wide variety of people and ideas. We want to promote a respectful, cosmopolitan and diverse coexistence. For this reason, we have established an awareness concept and want to contribute to making our festival a positive experience for everyone.

Transparency

On our journey to creating a more sustainable OMR Festival, we have already implemented some measures and seen the first changes. But it is important for us to emphasize: There is still much to be done. And: the measures we have implemented should not detract from the fact that we still face many challenges. These include, for example, circular exhibition stands, climate data collection and accessibility, to name just a few. But even if the challenges often seem overwhelming and mistakes do happen, we want to learn from them and continue to improve step by step.
